The L.A. River team is partnering with the local arts and culture nonprofit Clockshop to integrate cultural and artistic information into the design and planning process. Arts and culture are catalytic tools that can help communicate complicated needs and issues in approachable ways.
The Approach
To integrate the voice of the community in the L.A. River Project Design Tools, PX is partnering with Clockshop to host a series of artist-led workshops, surveys, and focus groups to explore community and cultural connections to the L.A. River.
The Engagement
On March 2nd, 2024 the L.A. River Project co-hosted the first artist-led workshop. Organized as a walking tour along the river bike path in Northeast L.A., the workshop invited participants to examine how the L.A. watershed interacts with the cultural and ecological histories of the surrounding neighborhoods, and the future of the L.A. River. After the walking tour, workshop participants explored the new design tools as they simulated historic flood events. The experience encouraged participants to experiment with their own placement of plants in a redesigned river and explore how this changes river flows.
